Biography

TIMOTHY P. O'BRIEN, ESQ. is the founder of the Law offices of Timothy P. O’Brien

Mr. O’Brien has a wide breath of experience both as a trial attorney, and participant in Bar Association activities. He has successfully litigated constitutional, civil rights, employment discrimination and personal injury cases for over 45 years. With his vast experience he has a keen knowledge of how to evaluate cases and what it takes to amicably resolve cases through the process of mediation.

After 45 years of successful trial practice, Mr. O'Brien is now focused on using that experience for the benefit of other lawyers in conducting successful mediations and meaningful early neutral evaluations.

In recognition of his skills as a trial lawyer, he was selected for membership in the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County, where he helped establish and was the first Chair of the Academy's Diversity Committee; he co-founded and was the long-term Chair of the Allegheny County Bar Association's Civil Rights Committee; he also served as a Vice President of the Bar Association's Board of Governors and was elected by the Bar Association's membership to serve on the ACBA’s Judiciary Committee.

Mr. O'Brien was selected as an original and was a long-term member of the Advisory Committee to the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Currently, in addition to his constitutional, civil rights and personal injury trial practice, Mr. O'Brien is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law teaching the course entitled "Section 1983--Constitutional Rights in Action”.

Mr. O'Brien is a retired Major, U.S. Army, having served initially as an Artillery officer and then for many years as an Assistant Staff JAG Officer assigned to provide legal services to Pa. Army National Guard members throughout Western Pennsylvania. He also organized through the auspices of the ACBA one of the first pro bono projects providing free legal services to reserve military personnel mobilized to deployments from Kosovo to the Middle East.

Mr. O’Brien has completed 40 hours of mediation training, and is certified in United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania to serve as a mediator, early neutral evaluator, and arbitrator.

  • 1975-1983-Neighborhood Legal Services Association, Staff Attorney, Coordinator of Complex Litigation, supervising several staff attorneys in bringing complex litigation in state and federal court.

  • 1983-1991- Sikov & Love, Associate/Partner; primary responsibility as a trial attorney litigating personal injury cases in state court.

  • 1991-2021-Owner Law offices of Timothy P O’Brien Esq., lead trial attorney successfully litigating civil rights, constitutional rights, employment discrimination and personal injury cases in state and federal court.
